Achieving psychological well-being is one of the most important goals of human life. Yet psychological health is a complicated and tricky topic, with many competing theories. One of the most widely-accepted theories focuses on the ratio of positive experiences to negative ones. Optimal ratios are three to one, and over eleven this ratio causes significant problems. In addition to addressing the individual needs of patients, DHS programs should optimize management. Before creating new programs, DHS should conduct psychological needs assessments, develop program types, and monitor them on an ongoing basis. Collaboration networks should be established between programs and DHS. Evaluation should be built into all DHS psychological health programs, and should include identifying metrics to measure program effectiveness and ensuring consistency of data collection across programs. Formal evaluations may be conducted by an external organization.
